Assets Make A Difference Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are special matched savings accounts that enable low-income families to save, build assets, and enter the financial mainstream. IDAs reward the monthly savings of working low-income families who are building towards purchasing a productive asset - homeownership, education, or entrepreneurship.
Savings for Life IDAs make it possible for low and moderate income families to learn and develop solid money management skills and build the financial assets they need to achieve long-term financial stability. Families that acquire productive assets are more economically secure, have more options in life, and can pass on status and opportunities to future generations. These assets have positive social, psychological, and civic effects that are independent of the effects of income.
Personal Financial Management Training While the match savings is the centerpiece of an IDA, the program has several other components including financial education training, individual financial counseling and asset-specific training. Participants are required to attend 8 hours of financial education training which focuses on spending behaviors, goal setting, debt management, budgeting, saving, consumer awareness, investing, and asset-protection. Asset-specific training is also required for homebuyer education and business plan development.
